Your Truffle Survived Summer. Here's How to Bring It Back.
Sunscreen at the pool. Sand at the beach. A day in a hot car because you forgot it in the back seat. Three months of summer is genuinely the hardest stretch of the year on a clear bag — and if yours is looking a little cloudy, hazy, or faintly yellow around the edges, that's not damage. It's residue, and almost all of it comes off.
Here's the end-of-summer reset, plus the storage trick that keeps it clear until spring.
What summer actually does to clear TPU
Worth knowing what you're removing, because different culprits need different handling.
Sunscreen is the big one. The chemical filters that protect your skin — avobenzone and oxybenzone especially — are oily, cling to plastic, and can leave a yellow cast on clear surfaces if they sit long enough. A leaked or squeezed bottle in a beach bag is the classic version.
Chlorine and salt water dry down into a fine film. Individually harmless, but layer after layer over a summer reads as permanent cloudiness. It isn't.
Sand is abrasive. Fine grit trapped in a seam or dragged across a panel by a wipe-down is how you get faint surface scratches that scatter light and dull the clarity.
Heat is the one people underestimate. A closed car in August gets far hotter than the air outside, and prolonged heat is hard on TPU. If your bag spent afternoons in a trunk, that's part of the story.
The good news: TPU is designed to be maintained. Cloudiness is a natural characteristic of biodegradable TPU, not a failure — and refreshing it is genuinely simple.
The reset, step by step
1. Empty it completely and shake it out
Everything out, including the things that have lived in the bottom since June. Turn it upside down and shake — you're getting sand and grit out before you introduce a cloth. Wiping with sand still in there is how you scratch the panels.
2. Our favorite method: essential oil and a soft cloth
This is the one we recommend above everything else, and it surprises people.
Dampen a soft microfiber cloth with a few drops of your favorite essential oil — we love tea tree — and wipe the clear panels in slow, even passes. The oil lifts residue that soap leaves behind, cuts through sunscreen film, and leaves the TPU genuinely clear rather than streaky. Tea tree has the added benefit of being naturally antibacterial, which matters for something that's been damp at a pool all summer.
A few drops. Not a soaked cloth.
Keep the oil off the leather. Oils can darken and stain leather trim. Work on the clear panels only, and take a moment to spot-test somewhere discreet the first time.
3. For tougher jobs, reach for Novus

4. Treat the trim separately
The clear panels and the trim are different materials and want different things.
- Recycled leather trim — a quality leather cleaner, applied with a barely damp cloth. Never soaked.
- rPET nylon trim — a gentle, non-abrasive soap and a damp soft cloth.
5. Let it dry completely
Fully dry, inside and out, before anything goes back in. Zipped up damp is how you get mildew and a smell that's much harder to remove than sunscreen ever was.
Air dry only. No hair dryer, no radiator — you've just spent a summer protecting it from heat.
The storage secret
This is the part most people skip, and it's the part that determines what your bag looks like next spring.
Store your clean, completely dry Truffle inside a cotton bag, somewhere cool and dry.

Two places to avoid:
The bathroom. Steam and humidity are exactly what you've just spent an afternoon undoing. A bedroom drawer or closet shelf is better.
Anywhere warm. Not the car, not an attic, not a sunny windowsill.
What not to do
- Don't machine wash or put it in the dishwasher. Not ever.
- Don't submerge it. Your Truffle handles light rain and a leaky bottle, but it isn't meant to go underwater.
- Don't use abrasive scrubs or harsh chemical cleaners. They'll scratch the TPU and dull the trim.
- Don't put anything away damp. The single most common mistake.
